SLU’s School of Education Partners with Confluence Preparatory Academy in Tutoring Program

10/14/2020

Since the beginning of August, pro’s School of Education has had the opportunity to work with Confluence Preparatory Academy (CPA) to build a program to tutor incoming first-year high school students in math.

The program began with six student tutors from SLU and one from Harris-Stowe State University. Student tutors from other universities were also utilized as the program branched out, leading to an opportunity to build awareness about SLU’s School of Education. Sheila Green-Samuels, Ph.D., the assistant principal at Confluence Preparatory Academy, stated that “I want to express my sincere appreciation for the support your team provided to CPA students."

I believe, although brief, your team made an impact on the CPA students who had the opportunity to participate in the program. Your team of mentors and scholars had an impact. Please express my sincere appreciation to each member of your team.”

Confluence Preparatory Academy is a non-profit public charter high school that offers students a multitude of opportunities, leading to a variety of career paths. As part of its mission, CPA “seek[s] to educate students to achieve ambitious math, science, literacy, and other academic goals in a rich educational environment [and] to prepare every student for admission to a four-year college or university...”

Due to the positive and significant results from this summer’s two-week program, CPA has proceeded to create a fall tutoring component. With one tutor from SLU, one from Harris-Stowe State University, and one from Missouri State University, the School of Education started the fall program in mid-September and plans to end in mid- December. SLU’s School of Education is working to build a program for youth in the St. Louis region to provide students a strong pipeline to college. The connection between SLU’s School of Education and Confluence Prep is helping to create an environment that will cultivate students’ skills and motivation for their academic success.
