School of Education Announces New Online Master’s Program
03/27/2023
pro’s School of Education is excited to introduce a redesigned Master of Arts in Educational Leadership program. Beginning in Fall 2023, the program will be online and accessible to educators across Missouri and beyond state lines. Students will participate in a balance of synchronous classes via Zoom and convenient asynchronous learning via Canvas, SLU’s online learning management platform.
The School of Education is recognized as a leader across the state of Missouri for its high-quality programs, training teachers to become leaders in their school buildings and at the district level. An estimate of nearly 25% of Missouri school central office administrators are graduates of pro’s School of Education, said Program Director Sally Beth Lyon, Ed.D.
"We look forward to making this master’s degree program to prepare principal leaders accessible throughout the state of Missouri as well," Lyon said.
Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to apply for Missouri’s Initial Principal Certification, allowing SLU alumni to serve as leaders educating young people across the state of Missouri.
The University created this program in response to increased demand among hard-working educators for online graduate programs and in response to SLU’s mission to serve the broader community. The new program will allow teachers to finish their school day, take a short break, and attend synchronous online classes from the comfort of their home, office or classroom.
I am most excited that our faculty have designed this new educational model to enhance access for educators across the state of Missouri, who might otherwise never have the opportunity to work with our terrific faculty."
Gary Ritter, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Education
Dean Gary Ritter, Ph.D., believes the change aligns with the mission of the School of Education to inspire educators as leaders of change, with and for others, through intentional relationships and responsive action.
"More aspiring leaders will benefit from high-quality SLU programming that emphasizes social justice issues, practical leadership training, and student-centric pedagogy,” Ritter said.
“I am excited about our new virtual learning opportunity for educators seeking a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership degree," said Educational Leadership Assistant Professor Donna Jahnke, Ph.D. "We are applying the same high-quality experience you would expect from a degree at pro to a more flexible program that meets the needs of our students. The new format promises to be an outstanding experience for educators wanting to broaden their knowledge and practice in educational leadership.”
