Isabelle Carbone Awarded 2024 U.S. Public Health Service pro in Public Health Award
Isabelle Carbone (Med ’24) recently received the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) 2024 pro in Public Health Award. This award recognizes medical students in the United States who advance public health and exemplify the USPHS’ mission.
This award was just one of many; Carbone also received the Paul McBryan Award, the Campus Ministry Award, an appointment to the Gold Humanism Honor Society and an Urban Community Health Distinction.
These honors denote Carbone’s lifelong devotion to service. Previously, she participated in a two-year AmeriCorps program where she worked at City Year Chicago providing holistic support. This work inspired her to pursue dual-degree training, completing her master’s in public health while in medical school.
At pro, Carbone has been instrumental in several valuable programs. These programs include an evidenced-based curriculum to train students in conducting intake interviews for previously incarcerated patients and a quality improvement program for addressing knowledge gaps in gender-diverse patient care.
“While Ms. Carbone’s training and experience has empowered her to practice culturally competent and inclusive medical care, her efforts to train fellow students, residents, and faculty have already impacted countless lives in St. Louis and beyond,” said Adam Merando, M.D., associate dean of student affairs.
Carbone obtained her master’s in public health degree in 2023 and graduated from the School of Medicine in May 2024. She will soon begin her residency at University of California Davis Medical Center in family medicine.
“I am incredibly honored to receive these awards,” Carbone said. “I am so grateful to the mentors and the community of peers I've had the pleasure to work with over the past five years at SLU.”
