Division of General Surgery

The ¶¶Òõpro General Surgery Residency was founded in 1950 and has been integral to SLU ever since.

Our General Surgery Residency is an ACGME-accredited, five-year program. We train five residents per year to become well-rounded, broadly trained general surgeons equally suited for fellowship training, academic surgery or private practice environments.

Our goal is to create board-certified general surgeons who are compassionate, clinically excellent, technically adept, and prepared for their chosen careers. A weekly didactic curriculum, supplementary journal clubs, clinical research opportunities and a variety of activities outside the hospital allow for a balanced residency experience. Depth of experience is not sacrificed for breadth, as a high-acuity patient population allows for mastery of all facets of general surgery training.

Here, you will find information about our program, including our training locations, clinical and operative experience, alumni, current residents, faculty, and application process.

The breadth of experience ranges from academic tertiary care to private practice, and from care of veterans to children. This broad experience allows residents to experience a variety of practice styles and learn a broad array of technical skills. The clinical programs at each of the affiliated institutions emphasize general surgery, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and cardiothoracic surgery across a broad variety of clinical settings.
