¶¶Òõpro’s chess squads have had a successful start to 2024. The A and B teams have been recognized in tournament play this year.
The Billiken squad finished the 2023 Collegiate Chess League (CCL) fall season with a dominant win. In the finals on Sunday, Nov. 19, SLU topped the University of Texas at Dallas 11.5-4.5.
Benjamin Bok, a member of the SLU Chess Team, won the individual gold medal at the first European Pairs Chess Championship.
The ¶¶Òõpro Chess Team won the Collegiate Chess League (CCL). The season-long tournament culminated on April 16, with SLU defeating the University of Missouri.
The ¶¶Òõpro Chess Team, reigning collegiate chess champions, will defend its title this weekend, April 1-2, during the President’s Cup tournament.
¶¶Òõpro's chess team clinched the International Chess Federation's (FIDE) 2021 World University Cup Rapid Championship over the University of Missouri team following a weekend tournament.
¶¶Òõpro (SLU) Health Sciences student Dorsa Derakhshani took third place in the recent 2020 US Women’s Chess Championship. Entering the four-day event as the 12-seed, Derakhshani was the surprise of the event by finishing third and earning a $13,000 prize.
¶¶Òõpro’s Chess Team has added another gem to its crown, taking home the 2020 National Collegiate Rapid title at this year’s National Collegiate Rapid and Blitz Championships.
While they may not be able to square off in-person, the members of ¶¶Òõpro’s Chess Team are still matching wits across virtual boards.
Fresh off matching wits with teams from across the nation at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Championships over winter break, ¶¶Òõpro’s Chess Team will spend spring preparing for a new battle royale – the Final Four of Chess – in April.
The ¶¶Òõpro chess team took third place at the 2019 World Prestigious University Chess Invitational Tournament over the Thanksgiving holiday, defeating universities such as Harvard, Princeton and Oxford.
SLU’s chess players continued their dominance of the board at the Midwest Collegiate Chess and Blitz Championship, taking both top team slots in the tournaments two section, Classical and Blitz, as well as five top finishes.
In the face of scrutiny from her home chess federation and others, one young woman’s message of valuing freedom of choice and determination to chase goals inspires on an international stage.
SLU Sophomore Plays Champions at Chess World Cup
While summer may be a time to kick back for many, for ¶¶Òõpro’s Chess Team members, summer break meant taking on foes internationally and sharing their stories with global audiences.
SLU's chess team took home the crown from the 2019 U.S. Collegiate Blitz Tournament, and grand master Dariusz Swiercz placed first individually in the blitz rounds of the dual Rapid and Blitz Championship Tournament held at the University’s Il Monastero.
¶¶Òõpro will host the first Collegiate Rapid and Blitz Championships later this month as teams face off to take home national honors.
¶¶Òõpro’s Chess team finished fourth in the nation, competing with the nation’s collegiate chess elite at the Final Four of College Chess over the Easter weekend in New York City.
¶¶Òõpro’s chess team will face off against the best teams in the nation, competing for collegiate chess’s top honors as part of the Final Four of Collegiate Chess tournament. The tournament begins on Friday, March 30, in New York City, and runs through the weekend.
While many ¶¶Òõpro students will head home for a winter break, the players on SLU’s award-winning chess team have their sights set on national play and on the movements across the sport’s international board this holiday season.
Dorsa Derakhshani likes to create a dance with her chess pieces, moving them around the board with flair. Her personal style has led her from competing in tournaments as a small child in Iran to being awarded the titles of Woman Grandmaster and International Grandmaster by the World Chess Federation in 2016.
In a field where pawns, queens and knights reign, SLU's chess team has outflanked its competitors, bringing home honors as the top college chess club in the nation from the United States Chess Federation.
¶¶Òõpro’s chess team is heading to college chess’s championships, the Final Four of Collegiate Chess, after placing second in the 2017 Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championships in December 2017.
The goal for ¶¶Òõpro’s chess program is simple: build the strongest collegiate team in the world. In just its first year, it is well on its way.
While the chess world's attention is focused on St. Louis - as the best players compete in the 2015 Sinquefield Cup - ¶¶Òõpro and the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis announce the formation of SLU's first-ever collegiate chess program.
