Program History
In 1989, Kevin J. Martin, M.D. became the Director of the Division of Nephrology and rapidly recruited a cohort of new faculty to expand the clinical and research activities of the Division both at ¶¶Òõpro School of Medicine and at the John Cochran Veterans Administration Medical Center. New dialysis activities were introduced and transplant nephrology activities were expanded. Interventional Nephrology was begun and has grown in scope and expertise over the years with three of the faculty participating.
The ACGME approved Nephrology Fellowship Program was expanded from one Fellow per year to the current level of three positions per year. The program has graduated approximately 100 fellows who continue in nephrology clinical practice, interventional nephrology or in academic settings.
