A Day in the Hospital Life

Internal medicine residency at SLU is premised on the idea that medicine is best learned at the bedside with active reflection and feedback to hone performance.

Our residents have roughly two-thirds of their rotations at our main teaching hospital, , and one-third at .

A typical day looks like this:

7 a.m.

Hand over (sign out) of existing patients and new patients admitted overnight. This involves face-to-face communication with the opportunity to ask questions, and read-back critical information and tasks that need to be done.

8 a.m.–9:30a.m. Attending-facilitated night medicine
9:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Attending-facilitated teaching rounds
10:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Topics in Internal Medicine (TIME) conference
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Finish teaching rounds if needed and complete tasks (calling consults, discharging patients etc.)

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Noon Conference
1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m.)

Finish daily tasks and write notes. This is also an opportunity for attendings and senior residents to do informal teaching sessions for interns and students. Teams sign out to the on-call team at 5:00pm.

7 p.m. - 7 a.m. The on-call team signs out to the night float team, who cross-cover all patients and admit new patients.
